One day, I wrote this on the Power Chicks Facebook page. “I need time away alone to rest, recharge and do some planning for the coming months. Anyone know of an affordable but cool place to stay?"
I even posted the sort of place I'd love to stay in:
Replies from Power Chicks came fast and furious: Seabrooke just north of Ocean Shores, Washington. Breitenbush Hot Springs in Oregon. Victoria, Canada, a town so beautiful with all the lights.
I felt blessed by your kindhearted responses! I checked out your ideas online and, on a whim, also Googled bed-and-breakfast spots on Vashon Island, WA. I have fond feelings about Vashon after spending a milestone birthday there pondering and plotting my life. (So, I haven't yet written those three books, but oh well! All in good time.)
As I pulled up Vashon locations on my computer, my phone rang. It was my friend, Amy Kessel, also a Power Chick, biz owner and highly skilled life coach.
“Hey,” she said, “why don’t you go to my house on Vashon Island? I’m in New York with family until next week. You’ll love it.”
What? Really? Yes! And thank you!
I spent four glorious days in Amy's sunny-yellow cottage which she tells me, later, was a bed-and-breakfast. I read, wrote, walked the beach, bought artsy little goodies, slept late and dreamt of wonderful things both personal and Power Chick-related. I headed home deeply rested.
The next day, I called Amy to thank her for letting me nest in her little cottage. She commented on the Facebook post I had left about places to stay.
"I know," I said. "I couldn't believe you called so soon after you read my question asking for ideas."
"Oh, but I just saw that question today," she said.
"What? You just called to offer your place out of the blue?" Honest to god, the idea of it sorta took my breath away. Still does.
All of which leads me to say: Ask for what you want. And have friends like Amy.
