Our dreams start with, well, dreaming. As they should.
To make them reality? We need a plan, a strategy. Something friends Betsy and Warren Talbott, who just published Dream, Save, Do, get – in a big way.
Unsatisfied with their lives a few years back, their dream was to travel the world. They plotted how to save money (which included selling every possession; man, I craved those sassy over-the-top boots Betsy sold!). The result, besides a much lighter load? A five-year trip around the world. Wow!
I caught up (electonically, anyway) with Betsy in Thailand, because I knew her story had big lessons for Power Chicks as each woman moves from dreaming to doing.
Lynn, Power Chicks: Betsy, your book Dream, Save, Do is about traveling the world. But lots of us are busy building our businesses! Tell us how what you've learned applies straight-up to Power Chicks.
Betsy, Married with Luggage: Good question. This is the plan we used to fund a 5-year trip around the world in just 25 months, but it works equally well if you want to get some cash in a short period of time to launch or expand your business, give yourself a grand vacation to celebrate a big accomplishment, or even do something really practical, like pay off your mortgage or your credit card bills.
Also, Dream, Save, Do is about more than saving money. It is about putting your focus and attention on the kind of life you want to live and guiding your money along that path.
Lynn, Power Chicks: In your guide you write about Dream Porn and the importance of staying motivated. Okay, so, that term cracks me up! What does it mean?
Betsy, Married with Luggage: Lynn, when you think about something that gets your heart pumping, something that makes you so excited you can barely contain yourself, something that will make you…well, you know. Well, when you find something like that to get your juices flowing, remind you why you're in this race called life, and make you breathe a little heavy in anticipation of reaching it, that is something that will keep you on track. You will save the money, take the actions, meet the right people, and generally put yourself out on a limb further than you ever would for anything else. Tweet this tidbit!
And the rewards for doing that are huge.
Lynn, Power Chicks: If I asked every Power Chick if they had a dream, 100% would probably say yes. Why do they need a guide to tell them how to reach it? I mean, you can't know how to reach everyone's dreams, can you?
Betsy, Married with Luggage: Actually, we don't know how to reach anyone's dream, Lynn. That comes down to the individual person. But we do know a thing or two about focus and action and what a little spark of an idea can become with the right amount of both. The lessons we teach in the guide are about money, but you'll see a message woven throughout about applying the same focus and action to your relationships and your actions on a daily basis.
Everything you think and do culminates in the life that you live. When you start thinking and doing different things, your life will be different.
Lynn, Power Chicks: Where is your focus and attention these days?
Betsy, Married with Luggage: We’re in Thailand right now, where we plan to stay for six months working on our next book and some other creative projects. One of our favorite current projects is the Try Something New ezine, where we profile a complete beginner trying something for the first time in hopes of inspiring people to stretch their boundaries a bit. So far we’ve had someone driving the 9000-km Mongol Rally, a woman publishing her first book on Amazon, and next up is…well, I can’t give it away, can I? Then it won’t be new to you!
