Do you feel so overwhelmed that there isn't any room in your life for to be creative, to think about a different perspective, or to solve the issues in your business? Overwhelm is your internal barometer that you are out of balance and need to do something to create space for yourself. (Tweet) It is a clear message that you need to start saying no to some stuff.

Having our own business puts a lot of pressure on our personal energy. Our business is like our child, we can't say no. We want to give our child everything it wants to help it grow up to be big and strong. We work for our child, giving, giving, giving. But this pattern is not sustainable and there are consequences.
Imagine a continuum with giving at one end and receiving at the other. If we spend too much time at one end or the other, we become imbalanced. Frequently as entrepreneurs, we give more than we receive. Our job is to find the balance on that continuum. In fact, establishing how much time you need to rest, recuperate and fill up your energy bank is key, and this balance is individual to each of us.
When overwhelmed and a pattern continuously giving goes unchecked, your boundaries become compromised. You lose the ability to discern what is working for you and what isn't. If your boundaries are doing their job effectively, a request is put in an energetic in tray. The demand that is made from us doesn't drain us. We don't feel immediately obligated. The request is put to the side and we make the decision to deal with it when we are ready.
If you are depleted and your boundaries are stressed, the request stresses you out. You wonder what the person wants from you, and you feel unable to screen it out. This depletion translates into a reduced ability to naturally shield or filter the emotions of others.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- Are you feeling overwhelmed?
- Are you feeling emotional?
- Have you been saying yes to everything?
- Do you need to say no more?
- When your inner voice tells you to say no, do you listen to it?
- If you don't listen to your inner voice, why?
- Are you giving more than receiving?
Be honest with yourself. There is no point pushing through when you are fried. You are not productive, you are not at your creative best, you are reactive to people and often misinterpret what people are saying or the way they are behaving. (Tweet) What do you need to do to reestablish balance?
Take the time to make a plan to get control (perceived control!) back. Make a list of the things that you need to say no to. You don't need to say no to these things forever but create space in your schedule to re-balance your body-mind. What you will notice is that your are less reactive, you feel less frayed, and when people request things you are able to screen out the request until you are ready to deal with it.
Reduced overwhelm plus healthy boundaries equals a thriving, successful business life!
